The Khoi Khoi live in South West Africa, particularly Namibia and the Western Cape, and are an offshoot of the bushman. They are believed to have come south from Botswana and Namibia around 2000 years ago, driven south by migrating Bantu. They are responsible for some of the magnificent ancient rock paintings found in the region.
Where the bushman were traditionally hunter-gatherers, the Khoi Khoi were and are herders and livestock farmers. They are particularly known for rearing the Nguni breed of cattle. The animals are kept for their milk, not their meat, and are a symbol of wealth.
